In order to become a User of one of the NanoMaterials Facility labs or tools, you must first be enrolled as a CNS/NNIN User.
In order to get specific tool training, first go to the CNS Training Sign-Up page. Most of the major instrumentation trainings are done via online sign-up. If you do not see a particular training online, please contact the CNS staff member in charge of that facility/tool and arrange for training or assistance. To determine which staff member you should contact, please consult the Facilities section of the site. If you still cannot determine which staff member you should contact, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
All NanoMaterials facilities/tools are located in rooms that require card reader access. For Harvard Users, the HUID is used as the access card and is automatically updated upon completion of training. Non-Harvard Users must go to the CNS Administrative Office (LISE 306) in order to obtain a CNS Facilities Access Card prior to the training if you have not been issued one previously. For non-Harvard Users, a LISE Card Reader Access Form must be turned in to the CNS Administrative Office (LISE 306) in order to obtain an access card. Access cards will only be issued to those who have completed their enrollment in the CNS/NNIN User Program.
Please see the Forms page of the User Info section of the website for the LISE Card Reader Access Form.
Many NanoMaterials Facility instruments have pre-requisites that need to be completed prior to training and qualification. Below is a partial list of some of these pre-requisites. The list does not contain every single instance where pre-requisite is required. As a result, it is recommended that you check with the CNS staff member in charge of a particular instrument or lab prior to training to determine if there are additional requirements.
* For any instrument in CNS NanoMaterials North (rooms LISE G04-06), there is a specific safety training required called, “NanoMaterials North Safety Training.” Please see the Training Sign-Up page for dates and times. This training must be taken prior to specific instrument training within any of the rooms in this suite.
* For any use involving the Nanoparticles Facility, there is a CNS Nanoparticle Safety Requirements Form that must be completed and submitted to the CNS Admin. Office (LISE 306) prior training on specific instruments within this facility.
* For anyone needing training on the XRA-002 Micro-CT, there is a X-Ray Safety Requirements Form that must be completed and submitted to the CNS Admin. Office (LISE 306) prior to training on that instrument.
* Anyone requesting training on the FIB-2 or FIB-3 instruments must have prior experience with the Zeiss SmartSEM software interface. If you do not have experience working with this software package previously, you must take the FESEM training first to learn the basics regarding the SmartSEM software.
As previously mentioned, there are other instruments and labs that have pre-requisites as well. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Material Synthesis staff member in charge of the tool or lab in question. You can determine the staff member in charge through the Facilities section of the CNS web site.
Please read the General User Information and Policy area of the User Info section of the website as it contains additional important information for CNS facility users.
